monochromatic 3d card

my monochromatic 3d card for the scrap tournament

kraft cardstock, embossed with sheet music for the background. the front piece was embossed and hand cut around the frame. stamped with distress embossing ink and embossed with clear embossing powder. the flowers and birds are kraft colored from my stash. there's another bird on the inside of the card. sorry didn't take a picture of it, and a friend liked it so much, i've given it away already.
thanks for looking!

at the corner

so the challenge in the tournament is to do a double page layout with the theme of within a 1000 steps of home.
what a challenge! wow. which way to go? i could head to the university, but that's 2.5km so that was out. i could go south 1/2 a block to the open field... of snow. but nah. i could go north to the grade school. but i don't really have anything to do with that. i chose to look east. to sutherland's central avenue. it's only 2 blocks. and there's a bunch of places... mostly what i like about the corner - is Wing World!

home of amazing wings - all 52 flavours (dill pickle or raspberry pepper are my favourites) and the most amazing sugar rush in a deep fried mars bar. oh my goodness. picture it. a mars bar, coated with a batter, deep fried until golden brown (which makes the chocolate melt) and then covered in icing (powdered) sugar. one is enough for 2 people.

anyhoo. when the bunch of us "bad" girls would scrap at JSI - just down the street the other way, we sometimes would take breaks and go to Wing World to initiate the Deep Fried Mars Bar virgins in the group. laughter and sugar rushes always happened.

i still like to go to Wing World - i don't get the mars bar any longer, it's just tooo bad for one. but i get the wings! i love the art work on the walls. that orange and lime green and black and purple! it's just tooo crazy and fun!
so that's what my layout is about - the little shop down the street, at the corner.
here's the double pager as one photo -

 the journalling:
Wing World... home of crazy wall art and deep fried mars bars. the bad girls would take a break from scrapping at JSI and go to Wing World to enjoy and initiate the Mars Bar virigin.... the newbie in the bunch. the sheer sugary goodness... heaven on a stick. we'd laugh and laugh and high on sugar, get the whole place going with us. the best place for me, halfway between home and scrapbooking. deep fried goodness and paper. what more could one ask for?

i used card stock, Heidi Swapp pattern paper from years ago, chipboard letters, green paint, the arrows are from Tim Holtz ideaology line, and black sharpie, white sigma pen, and some ephemera.

thanks for looking!

This is why

This is why i make cards and send them to the troops overseas...

"Dear Corinne,
I am sending you my deepest gratitude for sending such beautiful cards to us deployed soldiers over seas. The cards are gorgeous and it is a wonderful treat to pop a short note or thanks, or a hello, home to family and friends.
Your kindness has touched many of us here.
Thank you so much for thinking of us.

Captain M."

Thank you to all those who have donated and created cards for this project. Truly. Thank you.

wow. update?

WOW - it's really been that long since i updated?

huh.

not much going on. i've moved. that was a lot of work. and if i didn't have any crafting stuff - i would have had only 3 loads to move. as it was, i have WAY toooo much. lots was donated, but there's still loads there. does that stop me from checking out the new stuff? huh. NO WAY.

a new scrapbooking store opened in Saskatoon, and 2 closed. Scrapbook Studio (http://scrapbookstudiosaskatoon.ca/home/) is super and the owner Lori is just the sweetest lady.

the canvas above, is something that i've made in the last week. canvas, 2 boxes of crayola crayons, hot glue and a heat tool. it's soooo bright and cheery!

i'm not sure what else i've been making... i'm sure it's been something! mostly ATC's and art journal pages...

and maybe, i'll try updating a little more often.... maybe....

Camp Cropping recap

This past weekend was Camp Cropping put on by Scrapbookers Paradise in Calgary. a rawkin' time as always!

The class that i got to be Tent Mom (aka assistant) for was Bo Bunny and it was supposed to be 4 layouts in 2 hours! i dont' think we finished the first layout but that's ok - because the teacher - Matt from Bo Bunny was a HOOT! (and nice eye candy). loads of product and great layout ideas!

the next class i took was with Trisha (link over there on the side). she makes you WORK for your layouts and it's an impressive one when it's done! lots of hand cutting and layers. very yummy. i got a bit done on it but then spent the rest of the time visiting with Allison Orthner.... what a gracious lady and lovely spirit about her.

Camp Cropping always has a layout contest - one submitts photocopies of one's layouts, 3 judges take a look and pick out one layout for journalling, one layout for photography and 3 for overall.

this layout of Buddy was 3rd! i was soooo stunned and shocked that they picked my layout! what an honor to be included in the list!!!!

the funny part about all of that is.... for the past month, Barb Riley and Kate Kading and Amanda Lepage were smack talking (on facebook) about how Sask gals were going to clean up at Camp Cropping on the contest - they've done it for a couple of years in a row and those gals alllll have super talent!

then, i posted on FB that it would be super funny if i came in from behind and wiped their butts with my layout! i really didn't think i had a chance to even come close but i was going to enter anyway. the entry fee goes to the scrapbooking program at the children's hospital in alberta. great cause! why not then?

so i did, and here's my layout....

i won a bunch of things including a SEI album in a hour box - thanks sooo much to the judges and Camp Cropping.

The first prize (i don't even remember who got second, i was so stunned) was for a layout by the rawkin' chickie from Vonda - Amanda Lepage!!!! it's an awesome layout that documents some of her feelings about having cancer and beating it. look for it in the Canadian Scrapbooker magazine soon. amazing layout. ugly cry while reading the journalling and i'm honored to be her friend.

so yet another year that the Sask gals walked away from Camp Cropping with heads held high, tissue in hand from the crying and ribs sore from laughing and hugging. it's a super time and i cherish the memories from the road trip.

Thanks gals.

some ATC's that i did for swapping on SwapBot.
more for swapping - and all spoken for.
some postcards i did for iHanna's post card swap

the techniques i mostly used where masking and then inking over top, stamping and then i added touches of foil - i'd forgotten how much foil i had and now it's time to use it again!

those postcards are in the mail!

some cards i've been playing with. Mostly i think i'll try out for Anam's design team for sketches 2 scrapbook!

more cards later!

up-cycling

up - cycling (or recycling) for me involves using newspapers and cutting out flowers and leaves and gluing them down and then coloring over with copic markers in my art journal.

it also involves covering a canvas with various inks and paints and sprays and mists and stamps and adding pattern pieces as a ruffle.

and a lot more paint and some scrapbooking paper and old book paper, lace and rub ons - this one definately inspired by Christie Tomlinson at Scarlet Line and her "She Art" workshops.... great classes - very detailed and inspiring!
i've recycled many things already - mostly paper in some form, but i'm working on canvas, boxes and books lately.
Janet Weser is the master in my mind of creating vintage pieces using old things she's found - like pen nibs, door knobs, old lace and the like. i wish i could alter in the vintage style she does. i lurve her work - it's soooo detailed. and no, i have no photos of her work. or links.... sorry....

since i don't feel i can do vintage as well - i'm concentrating on playing with my inks and paints and canvas and seeing what develops.... it's all good. and it's all good that we have our own areas that we enjoy creating and playing with.
go - create something!

Art Journal – Visual Journal – Mixed Media Album

Pretty much - those three things are all the same thing. It's a collection of paper with your journaling and representation of that journaling in art form.

It's using almost anything to play and experiment in your book. there are NO rules. it doesn't have to be shown to anyone - unless you want it to be shown. There can be many layers or just one on a page. it's up to YOU.

It can be a book you purchased. Someday i want to play in Moleskin watercolour book. But for now - cuz i'm cheap (frugal) i make my own books. I collect envelopes at work and then use the back side of the envelope to make my books.

My basic book (or books) is a bunch of collected papers - everything from envelopes to watercolour paper, drawing paper, old maps, sheet music - whatever strikes my fancy at any given time. and since it's old and recycled, i really don't care what i put on it - it's all good. I've taken a couple of book binding classes at Art Placement and that really helps with figuring out the binding methods. but that's a whole different post.

If i could find an old ledger book that's used - I'd definitely play with that! you can use whatever you want to use. An old book, a brand new book (Strathmore Papers has a visual journal type book that you can get at Michael's) - it's totally up to you. if you want to trash a book - this is the perfect thing. There are NO rules.

Many journalers use nothing more than an inexpensive composition book, while others use artists' sketchbooks or hardbound journals.

The most important consideration when choosing a journal is how heavy the paper is. if it's very lightweight it won't hold up to a lot of paint and glue with preparing the pages first with gesso. Also think about how the book is bound: spiral bound books lie flat when open and are easy to work in. Plus you should consider if the book will expand to hold all the images and artwork you are going to create on those pages.

As for what to do in the book? Well - that's totally up to you. You can use it as a daily journal, write, draw, paint, paste, colour and all on ONE page! it really is an experiment book and there are NO rules!

Basic Art Journal Supplies
Before going out to spend a lot of money on the supplies, take a look around the house and see what you already have. You can experiment with loads of things - like the kids crayons and markers, gel pens, scissors, glue sticks, double sided tape, magazines.
The magazines are really handy for cutting out images that catch your interest and single words that you might make into a title. Cut them out and glue them in your book - add some doodling or paint and write....

Advanced Art Journal Supplies

Gesso - an acrylic primer for canvas and paper - you can also use gesso as a texture
Watercolour paints (great for backgrounds)
acrylic paints (ditto) and you can use those folk art paints up that you've got stashed in your cupboard from when you used to do folk art painting. once you've used those up, the tubes of acrylic paint that are available in the fine art area are worth the investment.
Watercolour pencils or crayons - colour just like regular pencils or crayons and then add water to create colour washes.
chalks or pastels for adding highlights and shading
rubber stamps
ink pads and re-inkers
stencils - especially if you don't like your own handwriting
sand paper - to roughen up pages for the distressed look
transfer/carbon paper for tracing images on your page
packing tape for transfers
gel medium - this is an acrylic medium that works as a great glue and sealant

Don't spend too much worrying about exactly what to do - just start doodling or writing whatever is on your mind. you may find some of your best work happens almost accidentally.

Think of something that happened during your day that made you happy or angry. one of the main points of an art journal is to vent emotions and opinions in a healthy way. You can put down things that happened you can't talk about, things that make you laugh, anything really.

Treat as a real diary if you want, or simply use it to collect your ideas. The whole point is that the journal is for you, by you and its contents are completely up to you . there are NO rules.

Turn off the filters and the inner critic. Don't hesitate to experiment or make mistakes. this is your journal. put in it what you want. if that's strictly drawings, fine. if that's a mixture of drawings, paintings, writing, collage and pasted in prints of your photographs. that's fine too. doodle aimlessly or try a new medium or technique. your artistic journey might not even happen all in one book.

it's all about playing and writing and being creative - there are NO rules!!

there's a lot of information here -sorry for the long post. there's some links over on the right that have some great art journal ideas.

check out Julie Balzer - she's got great prompts on Twitter for art journaling ideas. Daisy Yellow has an Art Journaling 101 feature that's really interesting.

go for it - you never know what you'll create!

Montreal and other things

i made this frame the other day - it's an ordinary frame from Michaels -$1.50 one. then i added many layers of bees wax - one layer at a time - and fused the layers with my heat gun... at some point i dipped my cookie cutter into the warm wax and that made those cool circles... last week i polished it up and then started adding some alcohol inks to the top - 3 different red/oranges, some yellow and some green and a touch of bronze. i think i'm going to have to make more! maybe adding red or green on the wax... hmm.... then i put ribbon around the outside of the frame - i totally got the idea from Suze Weinburg - she works for Ranger Ink and is the queen of the Melting Pot - someday i'm going to take a class from her!

i was in Montreal for some training for work and managed to squeeze in the sights with my Aunt and an old friend - i haven't seen Sherrie in years, and it was wonderful to re-connect. note to self - must do more of that!

so here's some sights of Old Montreal....

we happened to walk by when they were loading the red piano into the little coffee shop... cool eh? we should be so lucky to find such cool cafe's around here!

and look at that building - it's sooo neat - that's Deanna and Sherrie - and yes it was damp and dreary when we were sight seeing. figures!

This restaurant served the best steak i've had in a long time! and it was Alberta beef - i asked! :) very very tasty and the dessert was melt in your mouth awesome.

we managed to get in a boat tour of the river - it was a cool boat totally glassed in and we sat in comfort and gazed at the sights from the river - that river moves fast! and it's huge! got to see the expo 67 usa pavillon -that big dome and habitat 67 - that's a totally neat building or two...

gotta find that photo...

and these are some other things we saw....

one street look from the Quay into the city

and yes the street is on an angle - it was very steep in spots! and this is the city hall under cover - that was all painted tarp to hide the renos - very neat.

and a really cool cafe again... there were loads of those!
and that's it for now.
Aloha

Art Journalling

I've joined Shimelle's
Learn Something New Every Day class - i'm using an art journal to document this process... here's my cover.

i made the book with pages of the backside of envelopes - that's perfectly good paper! and a few signatures of heavier weight drawing paper. i've been painting, collaging (is that a word?) inking, stamping, and just plain old playing with different stuff.
what a lot of fun! and soon i'llhave some pix of the inside.... maybe....

and a layout i did... which i can't move around on the post.... arg....

LOVE IT KAREN!
just a plug for Karen - you HAVE to check out her blog.... and she has a group on facebook also.
Thanks gals!

long time no blogging.....

lately, i've taken a book binding class at Art Placement - this book is about 4 inches tall and 3 wide... ish....
great fun - and really nice ladies who taught it - and i'm going to take the next one - intermediate book binding. that will be a sketch book - i really enjoy the process of the making of the whole thing - cover and all!

these are 2 of the papers that i bought there - this navy one is HUGE - 30 x 28ish and it's almost as thin as tissue but not quite, the colors are not quite right.... but it's got these lovely chunks of stuff floating through the paper. not sure what i'm going to do with it - but i got this sheet, and the next - which is a microwood maple. very very pretty. it rips really nice - and cuts well. haven't folded it yet... but really - at $2.50 for a sheet that's 28x20 - i couldn't leave it there could i?
i tried putting glimmer mist on it - that didn't work so well. duh - but i'm going to try distress inks next.
plus i got other sheets - one lime green thicker than tissue with silk threads strewn all over, one really super heavy handmade type with bit of currency, a parchment type, one heavy cardstock weight handmade blue with flowers in it, a leather looking forest green sheet.... there were lots of papers to choose from and with Art Placement having a paper sale.... welll ....

the one layout i've done lately. it's an 8x8 so a bit small, but still, i got the photos on paper instead of laying in my desk drawer.

the flowers were done with Cathie Allen's stamping on black technique. stamp in white, paint with white, stamp with black, color it in, stamp over again in black. She's got a new positioning system for the placement of the stamps, but tape and some blocks worked for me. i used folk art paint to paint in the background, then colored in the stamp with a paint brush and some distress inks. may just have to do this one again! i like the look of it.

Thanks for checking out my blog!
